Over 100 years have gone by since Lucy Maud Montgomery first introduced the world to Anne of Green Gables, but her stories of Anne Shirley live on and continue to teach generations old and new some essential life lessons. To name a few: Friendship is very important, don’t be afraid to stay true to your (odd) self, let your imagination grow with the world around you, and last but not least, sometimes a little too much red wine disguised as Raspberry Cordial can get you (and your guests) in a little bit of trouble.
Life lessons aside, it’s safe to say Anne of Green Gables has had a positive impact throughout the years—whether it be through the words in paperback books, on the stage, or in the many movies and television shows inspired by her adventures. A story like this definitely deserves to be celebrated! And, also in line with our lessons from Anne, every celebration usually means a selection of delicious meals and treats.
So—without further ado—let’s get this party started! Whether you’re planning a summertime getaway to Prince Edward Island with us, or maybe you’re just a lover of Anne of Green Gables, we’ve got you covered!
Anne is a sweet girl through and through, just a little rough (crispy) around the edges at times. As this story takes place in beautiful PEI, we couldn’t have a party without including some delicious local PEI potatoes. That’s why these sweet potato fries are a very symbolic treat for your next gathering.
What You’ll Need:
3 Sweet Potatoes cut into ½-inch wide strips
Olive oil, for tossing
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon chilli pepper
½ teaspoon garlic pepper
¼ teaspoon cayenne (if you want a spicy kick)
1 teaspoon cornstarch
Salt and pepper to taste
What You’ll Do:
Preheat your oven to 450 F. While you’re waiting, wash and cut your sweet potatoes. Then, throw them in a bowl with olive oil and spices, and mix until everything is evenly spread. Add your sweet potato fries to a baking sheet and cook for 20-25 minutes (depending on how crispy you want them), flipping halfway through. Let them cool for 5-10 minutes and serve!
Can you really have an Anne of Green Gables party without something green? Besides, no party is complete without a delicious desert-y snack.
What You’ll Need:
¾ cup sugar
½ cup real butter melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon peppermint extract
1 egg
¼ cup milk
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 cups all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons green food colouring (more if desired)
Hershey chocolate kisses, chocolate chips for decorating
What You’ll Do:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and spray a baking sheet lightly with cooking spray (if you prefer, line it with parchment paper). Combine your melted sugar, butter, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract in a bowl, then add your beaten egg and milk and mix it all together. In a separate bowl stir together the baking powder, flour, salt, and green food colouring. Combine your flour and butter mixtures and stir gently until they’re well mixed. Using your hands, form small balls (about 1-1.5 inch) and place them on the prepared baking tray about 1-inch apart. Once your oven is ready, bake your cookies for 10-12 minutes. At the 8-minute mark, take the tray out and decorate the cookie tops with kisses or chips. Then put them back in the oven to bake for the remaining 2-4 minutes. When your buzzer goes off, take your cookies out and let them cool on a wire rack until they’re ready to serve!
Considering most celebrations involve friends, we can’t let this party go on without honouring Anne’s first real friend in Avonlea: Diana Barry. Anne and Diana hit it off immediately and swore to be BFF’s (“Bosom Friends” Forever). Their friendship carried them through many stages of their lives from childhood into adulthood, and they had many memorable moments together, including when Anne saved Diana’s sister’s life.
What You’ll Need:
2 pints blueberries
1 cup Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon honey
1 vanilla bean (seeds)
What You’ll Do:
In a small bowl mix your Greek yogurt, honey, and vanilla bean seeds together. Pierce each blueberry with a toothpick, then add them into the yogurt mixture—ensuring each one is thoroughly coated. Then, gently spread your yogurt mixture on a lined baking sheet and place it in the freezer until it’s frozen (this should take about 45 minutes) and serve!
Sure, this cordial is non-alcoholic, but if you want to get a little tipsy like Diana, feel free to spruce it up with your own alcohol of choice (or just drink red wine and pretend it’s Raspberry Cordial).
What You’ll Need:
4 pints raspberries, fresh or frozen (4 pints)
⅓ cup lemon juice (preferably fresh)
3 cups sugar
12 cups water
What You’ll Do:
Start by putting your water in a pot on the stove to boil. While you’re waiting, wash your raspberries, place them in a medium-to-large bowl with lemon juice, and toss them to ensure they’re all coated evenly. Once the water is boiling, add sugar and stir until it is completely dissolved. Then, remove the water from the stove top and pour it over your raspberry-lemon mixture. Let the mixture cool for 2 hours and it’s ready to serve. Feel free to strain the raspberries from the juice, or leave some berries to muddle in each serving for an added dose of fruity freshness!
Need more than snacks inspired by Anne to fuel your love for her adventures, there are plenty of other exciting things you can do and see while visiting PEI. To name a few, check out the Anne of Green Gables Museum, have lunch in Avonlea village, and be sure to swing by the Anne of Green Gables store for the perfect souvenir. Still can’t get enough?
