So, what’s all the talk about things to see and do in Yarmouth and the Acadian Shores? Here are just a few of the must-dos to check out once you arrive.

Climb Cape Forchu Lighthouse

One of Yarmouth’s most popular attractions is the Cape Forchu Lighthouse, which has been guiding sailors for generations. The original lighthouse was built back in 1840 and taken care of by many families over time. In 1962, the original structure was torn down, while the apple-core-shaped tower you see today was built.

Over the years, the Cape Forchu Lighthouse has become an exciting experience for visitors. Catch stunning sunsets, wander around Leif Erikson Park (where you can also get some clear views of The CAT coming or going), pop into the gift shop and, of course, the best part: book a tour and see the lighthouse from the inside. Climb 77 steps to the top and you'll be greeted by incredible views of the Gulf of Maine and the Bay of Fundy.

Visit the Yarmouth County Museum

One of the best places to explore Yarmouth’s rich history and uncover its many stories is Yarmouth County Museum. Set inside a historic former church, the museum is packed with more than 20,000 artifacts.

You’ll find everything from Acadian and Mi’kmaq culture and history to an impressive collection of ship portraits (actually, Canada's third-largest collection of ship portraits). Get a closer look at some other fascinating pieces from the past while you’re here, too, with exhibits featuring transportation, maritime heritage and glimpses into the region’s past.

Check Out the Stargazing Scene

Who wouldn’t want to see the sparkle of the cosmos lighting up the sky? Stargazing is a fascinating experience, and Yarmouth is the best place to do it — designated as the first Starlight Reserve in North America by The International Starlight Foundation.

So, where should you go stargazing? The options are plentiful! The Deep Sky Eye Observatory boasts an outdoor viewing platform plus an indoor dome complete with an HD telescope so you can get the best view deep into space. Trout Point Lodge offers guided stargazing walks and solar viewing, also with an outdoor viewing platform intentionally set away from the forests for a clear view of the sky. This amazing lodge has also been named the first certified Starlight Hotel by the UNESCO partner Starlight Foundation. And if you’re looking for a quiet, laid-back spot to take it all in, Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park offers just that.

Explore the Outdoors

Sitting on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s no secret that Yarmouth and the Acadian Shores have some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the province, along with tons of outdoor space to explore. The region is covered with white sand beaches perfect for a relaxing day, swimming or seeing what creatures and seashells you can find. If you’re into being a bit more active, there’s all kinds of recreational activities around town. Paddle through a creek on a kayak, cast a line and try fishing or work on your swing at one of the local golf courses. There are plenty of trails and hikes that will lead you to some of the area’s most stunning views and landmarks where you can soak up the beauty of Nova Scotia.

Taste the Coast

Nothing beats a fresh meal or a locally crafted drink. Yarmouth is home to fantastic restaurants, breweries, pubs and markets—and since it's on the ocean, the seafood is next level. Whether you opt for a bowl of seafood chowder or a plate of fresh lobster caught that morning, you’re in for a real treat. After your meal, make your way to one of the breweries, like Heritage Brewing Co. or Tusket Falls Brewing, for a laid-back afternoon and a cold beer. If you’re sticking around town for a bit, the local markets are great for picking up some homemade goodies or fresh produce to snack on during your stay.
