On the East Coast of Canada, adventure is in the water. The Maritime provinces hug the Atlantic ocean—and inland, freshwater is everywhere. Each corner of this region is just waiting for you to explore. Whether you’re canoeing down a rushing river, biking along the coastline, or lounging on a beach, there’s something for everyone. If you’re looking for a little outdoor excitement on your Maritime getaway, here are a few of our favourite ways to answer the call of the wild.
You’ve probably heard of the Bay of Fundy—it’s one of the seven wonders in North America, and is known for its high, fast-changing tides. But did you know there’s a way to experience these tides while really getting your steps in?
The Fundy Footpath is a 3-5 day, 41km hike along the lush forests and rugged cliffs of the Bay in New Brunswick. This challenging hike will get you in touch with nature, as you climb to an elevation gain of 300m. The trail cuts across two tidal rivers, where you’ll walk along the ocean floor at low tide. Get your camping gear ready, this rugged adventure is calling!
There’s nothing more Canadian than a canoe: the vessel was originally used by Indigenious peoples for communication and trade and it continues to be an important part of the country’s culture today. Why not try a canoe trip on your next visit to the Maritimes?
The St. Croix River is the perfect place to do so. The river flows along Maine’s eastern border with New Brunswick, and offers amazing natural scenery, and moderate whitewater perfect for canoers of all skill levels. Overnight trips can last between 3-6 days, depending on how far you want to paddle. Rent a canoe yourself or book a tour!
Has surfing been on your bucket list for years? Why not cross it off on while you’re in Nova Scotia! Destinations along the Eastern Shore (just 30 minutes from Halifax!) like Lawrencetown and Cow Bay offer prime beaches for wave seekers, particularly from August through to November.
If you’re a thrill seeking, experienced surfer and have a good wetsuit, winter offers some seriously wicked waves too.
And if you’re visiting in the warmer months, but have never set foot on a board, fear not—there are several surf schools in the area, as well as outfitters to rent from.
If you want a thrilling way to experience some of Nova Scotia’s nature, check out the many tidal bore rafting tours the province has to offer. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world—can you imagine experiencing that first hand? One minute you might be calmly drifting down the river, and all of a sudden, you could find yourself on a roller coaster of rapids. Talk about an adrenaline rush!
And to top it off, end your day sliding down the muddy banks of the Shubenacadie River. No rafting tour in the area is complete without a mudslide!
Both kayaking and stand up paddle boarding are great ways to experience PEI’s seascapes and red cliffs from a unique perspective. You can do this all around the island: whether you choose Charlottetown’s picturesque waterfront, North Lake’s calm waters or the Gulf of St. Lawrence in PEI National Park alongside wind-sculpted dunes, you’re sure to have an amazing paddle.
When in PEI, why not take the scenic route? Explore green farmlands, charming villages and the island’s distinct coastline as you cycle (or walk!) along the province’s portion of the Trans Canada Trail. According to Tourism PEI, the trail consists of 435 kilometers of rolled stone dust trail, which has very gentle gradients that never exceed a 2% incline or decline. The trail spreads all across the island and is suitable for a variety of fitness levels. Find more information here.
A trip to the Maritimes would never be complete without a visit to the beach. Each province is blessed with a never ending list of choices for where to soak up the sun. Local tip: If you’re looking for warm water, the Northumberland Strait is accessible in all three provinces, and it’s idyllic temperature will wash your worries away.
With so much adventure to be had, the Maritimes offer endless possibilities for nature lovers!
