Northumberland Ferries Limited Announces Season Start of PEI/Nova Scotia Ferry Service

Northumberland Ferries Limited (“NFL”) is pleased to announce that the ferry service linking PEI and Nova Scotia has successfully started full operations for the 2024 season on Wednesday, May 1st. A total of 1,400 round trips are scheduled for this season and are available for booking at ferries.ca.

MV Confederation has begun its traditional four round-trip daily operating schedule between May 1st to June 15th.

Through this past winter, MV Confederation underwent significant maintenance and all aspects of the vessel have been thoroughly checked to ensure a high level of reliability, including improvements to its moveable vehicle decks. In addition, significant terminal work on the loading ramps in Wood Islands and Caribou was completed.

Salt Water Scoops will be back in operation later this summer and our Quiet Room will continue to be available upon request. Also, prior to the end of May, Confederation’s Pet Friendly Lounge (E-deck forward) will open, providing additional options for our cat and dog lovers. Our Music on Deck program begins June 28th and features many great local artists.

NFL is incredibly pleased to again be working with Société des Traversiers du Québec (STQ) for a major portion of the 2024 season. MV Saaremaa 1 will return as our second vessel on the route, until MV Fanafjord is ready to enter service. Customers may notice MV Saaremaa 1’s arrival in Caribou as early as May 22nd. The vessel will remain in Caribou as contingency relief for MV Confederation prior to entering service on June 16th.

As of June 16th, an eight round-trip daily two ship operating schedule will be in place through to the Thanksgiving long weekend. Please visit ferries.ca for more information.

MV Fanafjord will be arriving this season after a significant refit, and as the refit proceeds, a more precise arrival date will be shared. On arrival, there will be additional work and crew training. Once complete and the vessel and crew have completed Transport Canada drills, the vessel will replace MV Saaremaa 1 as the second vessel on the route. NFL continues to move forward with detailed preparations to safely and seamlessly integrate MV Fanafjord onto the route as a permanent second ship.

Mark Wilson, Acting Chief Executive Officer for NFL stated: “The team at NFL has worked very hard over the off season to ensure we are ready in all aspects for this 2024 season. We very much understand the importance of this key mari􀆟me transporta􀆟on route and what it means to our customers in Prince Edward Island and throughout the Mari􀆟mes. We are deeply committed to delivering the service with a continued focus on safety and reliability. We are pleased to have MV Saaremaa 1 back for majority of season and the two ship coverage it brings as we continue to prepare for a permanent second ship on the route when MV Fanafjord arrives.”
