In case you noticed or heard about another ferry plying Northumberland Strait, that's MV Saaremaa, returning to NFL as a peak season contingency to add resilience to the  service. 
MV Saaremaa, which previously operated within the Northumberland Ferries fleet, arrived on Saturday, May 30 and will remain on ready standby through the peak season, while the current schedule continues as planned with MV Northumberland and MV Confederation.

This additional operational support is intended to strengthen the resiliency of the service and help ensure consistent, reliable operations for residents, visitors and commercial operators throughout the busy travel season.

On select MV Northumberland sailings in June, vehicle loading will be managed to prevent bottoming out or high-centering at the vessel-berth interface. This issue can arise due to low tide levels combined with MV Northumberland’s sloped truck deck, creating a "valley" that may cause certain vehicles, such as those with long overhangs, towing trailers, buses, or large RVs, to become hung up.

This is not related to water depth at our ports, as recent dredging at Wood Islands and Caribou was completed. It is specific to the vessel's configuration in low tide conditions.

This condition will be addressed through planned engineering work aboard MV Northumberland, with a permanent solution in place before May 1, 2027.
