Every Crew Member Has a Story

Every journey begins long before passengers step on board. Behind every greeting, every departure and every safe arrival is a crew member whose own story has led them here. Some grew up on the water. Others discovered a passion for the marine industry later in life. Different paths and different experiences, all connected by a shared commitment to getting you where you're going.

For Relief Captain Joe, that story started on the coast of Newfoundland. At just 11 years old, he was already operating a small boat, developing a lifelong connection to the ocean. While many people dream of a career at sea from a young age, Joe's professional journey took shape later. At 35, he began building his career in the marine industry, learning through hands-on experience and taking on nearly every role onboard along the way.

Every position taught him something new. Every crossing added another chapter. Fourteen years later, at 49, Joe achieved his goal of becoming a Relief Captain with Northumberland Ferries.

Today, when Joe welcomes passengers aboard, passengers benefit from the experience, professionalism and lifelong passion for the sea that has shaped his career.

His story is unique, but it's far from the only one. At Northumberland Ferries, every crew member has a story worth telling. Stories of unexpected career paths, lifelong friendships, family traditions and a shared commitment to creating safe, memorable journeys for the thousands of passengers who travel with us each season.

Because every crossing has a destination. And every crew member has a journey that brought them here. Travel with us and discover the people whose stories, dedication and passion bring every journey across the Northumberland Strait to life.
