Hit the Trails
Fall is outdoor adventure season here in Canada’s ocean playground. Vibrant colours, crisp sea breezes and awe-inspiring coastal scenery make autumn in Nova Scotia a true hiker’s dream. From picture-perfect Gulliver’s Cove to the trails of Acacia Valley, there are a wide range of world-class trail options located within spitting distance of Digby — whether you’re looking for a leisurely seaside ramble or a challenging trek along the rugged Atlantic coast.
Looking to take your wilderness wandering a little farther afield? Hit the road southbound along Brier Island and Long Island to Balancing Rock Trail. Dubbed “Nature’s Time Post”, this narrow column of basalt rock is one of the province’s most recognizable natural formations. It lies at the end of a scenic 2.5-kilometer trail and down a 235-step staircase, where you’ll find interpretive panels and a viewing platform perfect for taking in this geologic wonder (and maybe even snapping a selfie or two).
Enjoy Post-Hike Hops at Lazy Bear Brewing
Afterwards, reward your morning of outdoor fun with a stop at Lazy Bear Brewing. Located ten minutes from Digby in neighbouring Smith’s Cove, the celebrated small-batch brewery offers a delightful selection of seasonally crafted, high-quality Nova Scotian beer and cider. Stop in on a Thursday or Friday and you could even enjoy a taste of authentic wood-fired pizza from their on-site food truck, The Firebox — the tastiest way to refuel from a wilderness adventure.
Visit the Home of a Folk Art Legend
Fall is the perfect time to enjoy a bit of open-air dining before winter’s chill sets in — so bundle up, pack a snack, and head over to Maud Lewis Memorial Park in nearby Marshalltown. A short, three-minute drive from Digby, the park is located on the site where Nova Scotia’s most famous folk artist created her whimsical paintings from 1938 to 1970.
Today, you’ll find a steel replica of Lewis’ iconic Painted House (the original structure was moved to Halifax, where it remains on permanent display). Learn about the artist’s life and work through the park’s interpretive panels, be inspired by the beauty of the tranquil perennial garden and then head to the on-site picnic area, where you can take a load off and enjoy a light afternoon nosh.
Snap a Photo at Point Prim
If you’re looking for that perfect travel photo to capture your coastal fall adventure, picturesque Point Prim provides a truly breathtaking backdrop. Located at the mouth of the Digby Gut, the historic red-and-white lighthouse is the fourth lighthouse to stand in this spot, dating back to 1804. Take in sweeping views of the Bay of Fundy as you watch for seals, porpoises, lobster boats and, of course, MV Fundy Rose. Time your visit just right, and you could even snap a few photos of one of Point Prim’s famously spectacular fall sunsets.
