5 Fun Places to Visit Near Wood Islands, PEI

Fresh off the ferry to PEI and looking for fun? Here are five must-visit spots 30 minutes or less from Wood Islands!

If you’re visiting PEI aboard the mv Confederation or mv Holiday Island this summer, your first stop will be Wood Islands. Named after several small islands lush with forest in the Northumberland Strait, Wood Islands is where your ferry journey to PEI concludes; it’s also where your PEI adventure begins. Often, folks are quick to make their way to Charlottetown or Anne of Green Gables Country when they depart the ferry, but there are plenty of fun attractions to check out around Wood Islands! If you’re looking for something a little ways off the beaten path to make your PEI vacation a memorable one, here are five fun places to visit near Wood Islands.

Visit the Wood Islands Lighthouse

There are many lighthouses throughout PEI, but the first one you’ll see when you arrive is the Wood Islands Lighthouse. This three storey lighthouse holds the special distinction of being one of the final three lighthouses in the province to be fully automated, as well as the last PEI lighthouse to also serve as a home for the light keeper and his family. Today, the Wood Islands Lighthouse is home to a museum on the history of lighthouses and ferry services to PEI and also features a recreation of what the keeper’s quarters and kitchen looked like in the 1950s.

Spend the Day (and the Night) at Northumberland Provincial Park

Many visitors on PEI come with the intention of camping, and we can’t say we blame them. There are many beautiful places to camp throughout PEI, including Northumberland Provincial Park. Just a few minutes from Wood Islands, this park is home to a beautiful ocean beach (complete with the famous red sand), a playground for the kids, and stunning views of the water. If you’re not looking to rough it in a tent, but still want a place to stay, you’re in luck, as there are camping cabins in the park that are available to reserve. Not only do these cabins offer a roof for over your head, they also have electricity—turning your camping experience into a glamping experience!

Sip and Savour at the Rossignol Estate Winery

If you’re travelling to the island for a romantic getaway or with friends, the Rossignol Estate Winery is a perfect spot to start your adventure off right. A world-class winery, Rossignol Estate is a gold medal winner at the All Canadian Wine Championships and boasts “Wines as unique and beautiful as the island.” After you sample the red, white, and fruit wines crafted at the winery, be sure to browse the winery art gallery and take in the stunning views of the vineyard.

Dig Your Evening Meal at the Beachcomber’s Clam Boil

An excellent adventure is bound to work up your appetite. Luckily, when you arrive in Wood Islands, you’re not far from the Beachcomber’s Clam Boil, where you can explore the shoreline and find your evening meal. That’s right, you’ll learn how to spot clams, scallops, mussels, oysters, and more! Then, you can actually comb the water and the beach for your own! When you collect enough food for a “feed,” the folks at the Beachcomber’s Clam Boil will toss them in the pot and cook you an absolutely unforgettable meal.

See Point Prim—One of the Most Beautiful Places in Canada—For Yourself

In 2016, Conde Nast Traveler named Point Prim as one of the most beautiful places in Canada. One look at this gorgeous slice of paradise and it’s easy to see why. Almost entirely surrounded by water, this peninsula is home to the Point Prim Light Station—PEI’s oldest lighthouse and one of only two circular brick lighthouses in Canada. This distinction makes the station a perfect spot for an iconic  during your journey, or simply a wonderful location to take in the beauty of the region

With so many interesting destinations within 30 minutes, you could easily forget that there’s an entire island waiting for you to explore, but it’s true!
