Northumberland Ferries Limited

The way Atlantic Canada was meant to be explored—by sea.

Since 1941, Northumberland Ferries has been transporting passengers and their vehicles between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. In fact, you probably remember taking the ferry as a child – it’s time to make those special memories again with your family! This 75-minute ferry trip runs across the Northumberland Strait between Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia, just outside of historic Pictou. Walk or drive aboard our vessels – the mv Confederation and the mv Holiday Island – then relax, stretch your legs, and experience the beauty of the Maritime sea and sky.

For local souvenirs, check out the Caribou Ferry Terminal, home to Caribou Gifts a (open daily between 10am-6pm) or visit In Good Taste Gift Shop aboard the mv Confederation. Summertime crossings feature unforgettable Seaside Experiences, a showcase of the finest music, entertainment, food, wine, and beer samplings the region has to offer. Treat yourself to a meal or snack onboard in our Salt Water Café which features a selection of locally-sourced hot and cold menu items. In the summer months, be sure to enjoy a delicious ice cream treat from COWS Ice Cream (mv Confederation) or a soft-serve cone on the mv Holiday Island. An outdoor seating area allows passengers to enjoy the fresh sea air during the crossing along with the best photo-ops of the coastline.

Make an advance reservation for the crossing time of your choice online or call toll free 1-877-762-7245. By taking the ferry, you’ll even save up to 100km driving between Charlottetown and Halifax, or up to 300km from Charlottetown to any eastern Nova Scotian destination.

Please Note – It is recommended (but not mandatory) that that you make a reservation when departing from Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island or if making a return trip from Caribou, Nova Scotia. Currently there are no one-way reservations available from Caribou, Nova Scotia as payment is only required when departing Prince Edward Island.

Fun fact – 99% of passengers surveyed in 2017 would recommend our ferry service to a friend!
